How to run it

  • Ask the front office for a list of every adult in the building, not just classroom teachers. Aides, substitutes, and support staff get left off most lists.
  • A single catered lunch that runs out by 12:15 reads worse than no lunch at all. Order for the real headcount, not an estimate.
  • If you're one parent organizing for a classroom, coordinate with the other parents first. Five separate five-dollar gift cards read worse than one pooled card.
  • Avoid anything that requires the teacher to store, display, or maintain it at school. Desk space is already gone.
  • Give it during the actual week, not two weeks early because that's when you remembered.

What to write

Thanks for covering my class on ten minutes' notice. Teacher Appreciation Week is for you too.

You share every worksheet you make without being asked. That makes this whole building better.

First-year teaching is hard, and you made mine easier. Thank you.

FAQ

When is Teacher Appreciation Week in 2026?

Teacher Appreciation Week 2026 runs May 4 to 8, the first full week of May. National Teacher Day falls on the Tuesday of that week, May 5. Source: National Education Association.

Why do teachers complain about Teacher Appreciation Week gifts?

r/Teachers runs a recurring 'worst gift' thread every May. Of 92 gift mentions we classified, 74 were negative, most often novelty items (a stapled stick of gum, a box of rocks), food that ran out before reaching everyone, or symbolic non-gifts like a printed email.

What do teachers actually want instead?

The positive mentions we found, though a smaller sample, named a genuinely personal handmade or handwritten gift from a student, a catered meal that doesn't run out, and a gift card paired with a real note as the gifts that landed well.

Is a classroom supply gift card a good idea?

Yes, with one caveat: pair it with a note naming something specific the teacher does well. A gift card alone, especially for a small amount, showed up repeatedly in the negative side of our research.

The evidence on this Teacher Appreciation Week page comes from reading real threads where Teachers and the people who buy for them talk about what actually worked, not from a survey or a vendor's own data. Nobody on this site claims to have tested these products personally — see how we pick gifts for the full method.
